Health Care Chaperone
SSM Health is committed to the safety and dignity of our patients. It is our standard practice to offer a health care chaperone when requested by any member of the care team, a patient, or the patient’s representative during a sensitive clinical examination or procedure. Honoring these requests promotes respect for patient dignity and the professional nature of the examination.
A copy of the SSM Health Care Chaperone Availability policy for Wisconsin can be made available upon request.
The presence of a health care chaperone is intended to create a safe environment for both patients and providers. A qualified health care chaperone is an SSM Health employee, designated by the clinician or supervisor, to be present during the exam or procedure. Additionally, chaperones may assist the health professional with the examination or procedure if trained to do so. A health care chaperone may be requested to help enhance comfort, security and a sense of privacy during sensitive examinations or procedures. All attempts will be made to meet gender and culturally specific requests for a chaperone.
A sensitive exam or procedure is a physical exam or procedure that exposes a patient’s breasts, genitals or rectal area. Requests for chaperones will also be honored for exams and procedures not considered sensitive.
